One of my good friends once shared an analogy with me about life, which I’d like to pass on to you.

We are all on a train called life. Our train usually has different compartments in which we travel in throughout life. In our first years of life we share a compartment with our family. Then we might be on our own for a bit or share a compartment with friends until we find someone we want to be a family with again. There are also some people who might join you on your journey for a while, be a guest on your train to depart it at one point not leaving anything behind. However, there might also be some people accompanying you, when they depart your train, they do leave something behind or take something with them. They might leave a broken heart behind and might have left the train with a piece of yours. Or they were part of your journey to be a friend or mentor to you during a tough time. They leave behind wisdom and strength and have played a huge role in healing you. Other people are part of your journey for your entire life. Those are the very special ones. Family and some precious little friends are the one constant in our life, who will be a part of our journey through the good and the bad times.
Even though there might be some people who board our train without us knowing about it, they might still have had a huge impact on our life and helped form us into the person we are today. This might have „only“ been a stranger’s smile at checkout in the supermarket around the corner that made your day and let you to make a decision on that day that you wouldn’t have made if not for that smile.
The people that spend some time with us on our journey either leave good or bad memories behind once they depart our train. They might even leave behind some wrecked doors or windows on our train that are a reflection for the scars on our heart that will always be a part of us.
The interaction with other people along our journey, may that be during our time at school, during our studies or later in in the job, the social environment we choose to spend time in form us to be the person we are today. It is said that we become like the 5 people we spend the most time with. So I encourage you to surround yourself with people that inspire you.
Based on this, the purpose of life very much consists of traveling with people that we love and whom love us, inspire us in beautiful ways and support us in doing what truly makes us happy.
You might not be able to steer your train at all times or have power over who boards or leaves it. But most of those decisions are up to you and if not you still choose how to react to anything that’s happening to you.

So I encourage you to make the most of your train ride. We only get one ride.
